Walter McDonald was born in Rochester Minnesota, received a BA from Williams College and his MD degree from the University of Michigan. Following a residency in internal medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University, he returned to Michigan for residency training in endocrinology. He is certified in both internal medicine and endocrinology.

Dr. McDonald was the Chief of Medicine at the Portland Oregon VA Medical Center for 12 years before becoming Associate Dean for Education at the Oregon Health Sciences University. In 1995 he moved to Philadelphia to become the CEO of the American College of Physicians. In 2002 he left the American College of Physicians to take on the role of CEO of the Chicago-based Council of Medical Specialty Societies. He retired from that position at the beginning of 2008.

Dr McDonald serves on the Executive Committee of the Physicians Consortium for Performance Improvement, and is Chair-Elect of the ACP Foundation and a Board member on several other foundations.

He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha and has been elected as a Master of the ACP. He has been recognized by Oregon Health Sciences University as Alumnus of the Year (1998) and has been recognized by a number of organizations for both his teaching and leadership skills.

Medical and Surgical Specialty Societies
As CEO of the American College of Physicians for over seven years, he dealt with all of the other major societies. In the role of CEO of the Council of Medical Specialty Societies he interacted with thirty of the largest of the societies. He has also served as a board member or consultant to several subspecialty societies
Management of a not for profit entity
Dr. McDonald has over twelve years of experience as a successful not for profit CEO.
Under his leadership, the organizations grew in membership numbers, budget and prestige. He has also been on the governance side of a number of not-for profit entities.
Board function
He has served as a member or chair of a number of boards.
Merger issues
Dr McDonald was the CEO of a 100 thousand member organization which merger with its 20 thousand member rival and chief competitor. It is an almost unique occurrence among medical membership organizations in the past 50 years.
Continuing Medical Education
He has been the CEO of an organization that is responsible for a major portion of Continuing Medical Education for internists. He has also served as a liaison to the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. J Contin Educ Health Prof 2005; 25(3):144-150

Quality measurement
Dr. McDonald is a member of the Executive Committee for the Physicians Consortium for Performance Measurement. He also commissioned and contributed to the monograph The Measurement of Health Care Performance http://www.cmss.org/images/Primer.pdf.
